SAN DIEGO ---- Antoine Cason's initial foray on the Chargers' practice
field didn't go very well. The combination of first-practice jitters,
faster paced drills and the schematics of a defense he's learning on
the fly made for what he termed a "rocky" debut.
After a night
of thinking and replaying last Friday's events, the first-round pick
out of Arizona decided the tense feelings on the first day of a
three-day minicamp needed to be replaced by a fun frame of mind.

Chargers ready to take next step |
|
Tuesday, 06 May 2008 |

Source: ESPN.COM
By: Bill Williamson
SAN DIEGO -- A.J. Smith knows "almost" doesn't mean anything in the NFL. He knows it all too well.
Smith was a personnel man for the Buffalo Bills in the early 1990s when the team went to four straight Super Bowls and lost them all. After those experiences, Smith is weary of getting excited about having a good roster. So excuse him if he doesn't get caught up in all the hype about his San Diego Chargers, who finally may be ready to take that necessary step from contender to champion. He knows how talented his roster is. He knows the recent history in which his team won three of the past four AFC West titles. He remembers the 14-2 regular-season record in 2006 and recalls the trip to the AFC title game last season.

Cassandra Gardner did not see her son's NFL-record 109-yard return of a field goal at Minnesota this past Nov. 4.
Gardner, Antonio Cromartie's mother, was in a hospital, sedated after
an ordeal two days earlier that allegedly involved her being kidnapped
by her estranged husband.
When Gardner later watched a recording of Cromartie's amazing grab and run, she was overcome.

Recovering Gates has cabin fever |

SAN DIEGO ---- Minicamp was a strange three-day period for Antonio
Gates. Spending time in the training room rehabilitating an injured toe
is not the way the Chargers tight end would have preferred to pass his
weekend.
"This is the first minicamp I missed in six years,"
Gates said Sunday. "It's just weird not being out there, especially
when I know guys are out there working hard."

Continuity.
It was the Chargers' front office's explanation and became the players' catch phrase.
All was going to be smooth in 2007, because Norv Turner's offense
preceded him here and defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell was a disciple
of predecessor Wade Phillips.
Let's just say the Chargers wanted to believe it.

That's Jacob Hester?
That's the guy for whom the Chargers gave up next year's second-round pick and a fifth-rounder this year?
That's the new Michael Turner?
Upon first seeing Hester in shorts and his Chargers jersey, this might be a common reaction.
He ain't mad at ya.

Jeromey Clary is the first to admit he was not NFL-ready out of college. So he brought his lunch pail, punched his time card and went to work.
Two years later, the former Mansfield High School standout is richer for the experience.
He is the San Diego Chargers starting right tackle and recently was awarded $253,015 in "performance-based pay."

SAN DIEGO ---- The sun was beating down in a piercing manner on
Saturday as the Mozart of NFL running backs caught a simple flare pass
and cut up the field. There wasn't the slightest sign of knee soreness
as LaDainian Tomlinson darted down the sideline in the familiar fashion
that long ago provided him superstar status.
The previous day,
Tomlinson smiled during an individual drill and later supplied some
hands-on tutoring to rookie Jacob Hester. His easy way of interacting
with teammates and his typical lead-by-example style appeared to be in
midseason form.

About three months after ACL surgery, Rivers returns |

By Bill Williamson
SAN DIEGO -- Philip Rivers was chatting in a hallway after a minicamp practice Friday as the Chargers' offensive linemen came bulldozing through.
Each of them gave their quarterback a wink or a smile or a nod. Everyone had something for Rivers. There was recognition. There was adoration. There was the acknowledgment of a leader.
"I don't know what 'it' is, but PR has it," San Diego center Cory Withrow said. "He loves his teammates and we all give it back to him. The guy is going into his third year playing and he acts like he's a 15-year vet. He didn't need to be out here for a May camp with that injury, but he loves it. The guy is all football all the time. He just gets it."

Chargers 35, Texans 10: Chargers take out their frustrations |

SAN DIEGO -- After a trying week in which dozens of players and coaches
were forced out of their homes by wildfires and the entire team was
forced out of the state to practice, the San Diego Chargers took their
frustrations out on the Houston Texans, rolling to a 35-10 victory
today at Qualcomm Stadium.
Tight end Antonio Gates and defensive back Antonio Cromartie each
scored a pair of first-half touchdowns for the Chargers, who claimed a
share of first place in the AFC West with the win, their third in a
row. San Diego is 4-3, the same record as Kansas City, which had a bye
Sunday.

SAN DIEGO -- Mayor Jerry Sanders said Thursday that Qualcomm Stadium
should be ready by Sunday to play host to the Chargers' game against
the Houston Texans. But he said the decision whether to play the game
there as scheduled was up to the team and the NFL.
Sanders said Qualcomm is scheduled to close at noon today as an
evacuation center for people displaced by wildfires in the San Diego
area. And while people had been waiting for Sanders to make a decision
about the game, the mayor indicated the decision to proceed was up to
the league and the Chargers.

Chargers Say Game Would Be Important |

The San Diego Chargers are well aware that football is only a game, and
they are but entertainers. The fires rampaging across the San Diego
area make that very clear.
Still, the Chargers believe that by playing the Houston Texans
somewhere on Sunday or Monday will fill a useful role for a community
just beginning to sift through the ashes.
